Increment threshold and detection latency in the rod and cone systems.

چکیده

It was reported previously that increment-threshold functions obtained in the dark-adapted rod and cone systems have two distinct branches, and that these functions are predicted by a simple model similar to those developed to describe vertebrate reaptor responses. The model also makes several unusual predictions concerning the latency for detection of the increment field at threshold. These predictions were tested by measuring simple reaction time for detection of the increment field as function of background intensity. for background durations of 50 and 500 msec. The predictions were found to hold with reasonable accuracy for both the rod and cone systems.

Initial-image and afterimage discrimination in the human rod and cone systems.

1. The rod-isolation technique of Aguilar & Stiles (1954) was used to obtain scotopic increment-threshold functions in the dark-adapted eye. Increment-threshold functions were obtained for background durations of 50 to 500 msec, but the onset of the background and increment fields was always simultaneous. In all conditions the duration of the increment field was 50 msec. 2. The pattern of resul...

Rod threshold: influence of neighboring cones.

Changes in rod increment threshold at the center of a desensitizing background disc were measured. Sensitization by an annular surround was shown to depend more upon the surround’s effects on cones than on rods. This demonstrates a rod-cone interaction in which the activation of cones in the vicinity of a test flash influences the detection of that flash h.r rods.

Prenatal ethanol exposure alters scotopic and photopic components of adult rat electroretinograms.

Ocular malformations and visual deficits are pathognomic of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). However, there are no reports on retinal visual function. To determine if prenatal (human second-trimester equivalent) or prenatal plus 10 days of postnatal (human third-trimester equivalent) ethanol exposure produced scotopic and/or photopic deficits in adult hooded rats, electroretinography (ERG) was use...

Summation of Rod and S Cone Signals at Threshold in Human Observers

We examined whether signals from rods and S cones can combine to produce a threshold response. Test flashes of specific wavelengths superposed on a long wavelength adapting field were used to isolate threshold responses from the two receptor systems, simultaneously and at the same retinal location. Dark adaptation experiments and spectral sensitivity determinations indicated that, in the adapta...

Spatial and temporal properties of light adaptation in the rod system

Little is known about the mechanism that regulates the sensitivity of rod system at its normal operating light levels. Two experiments are reported in this paper. First, we searched for nonlinear distortion products in rod vision that could be generated from any local adaptation process, using a sensitive experimental procedure that has demonstrated local adaptation in cone vision. No local ada...
